Not Quite Snow White
The first feature of February is here with Not Quite Snow White by Ashley Franklin (Author), Ebony Glenn (Illustrator).
This adorable cover and title grabbed my attention right away. A feel-good picture book that shows children they can be anything they want to be. I love how this story reimagines the classic princess roles and embraces diversity and inclusion. The confidence of the main character is refreshing, and should be encouraged and shared among all young children.
Tameika loves to sing, dance and act on stage. She does it well, and is excited when she has the opportunity to audition for a new role as a princess. But when she hears peers whispering and snickering about how she’s just not quite right for the role, she starts to doubt herself. With a little encouragement, Tameika learns nothing should hold her back from being the star she is.

As with every picture book, I also want to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book.
Since this picture book focuses on children participating in a school play, try creating that opportunity for the children after reading this story. You could focus on one big production or several little plays depending on the number of children you have. Maybe you have the kids act out different books, or well known plays/movies that they already know, like Snow White.
Allow children the opportunity to be in different roles :)
Other options:
-Puppet theater
-Talent show
-Role playing different kid-friendly scenarios
I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, Not Quite Snow White, the printables, and hands-on activity.
