When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree

The first feature of March is here with When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree by Jamie L.B. Deenihan (Author) and Lorraine Rocha (Illustrator).

Have you read this adorable story yet?! If not, do it. Now. This picture book is SO kid-friendly, extremely relatable, sweet, funny, and those illustrations…! I just love everything about it. While you or your child may have never been given an ACTUAL lemon tree for a gift, there has of course been those times when given gift they did not ask for/want. And making a lemonade stand, is like a right of passage! Brilliantly done.

When a young child is given a lemon tree from her grandma as a birthday present, she is quite disappointed. BUT as she follows the instructions of what to do and what NOT to do, she learns this present may be exactly what she wanted after all. This clever story features the importance of patience, being grateful, hard work, and community.

As with every picture book, I also want to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book.

For this activity, we of course need to get out in nature and do some planting! Depending on the climate where you are, you and your child/ren could begin planting your very own garden OR get some seeds for a small house plant. Allow your child to take care of the plant/plants and learn what the plant needs. To go a step further, have the child/ren keep a journal. They can draw/write weekly entries including the growth and changes the plant is making. :)

I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree, the printables, and hands-on activity.
