A Loud Winter’s Nap

The second feature of January is here with A Loud Winter’s Nap by Katy Hudson.

The cover alone is what grabbed my attention to this story. Everything on this cover speaks hilarious, fun, relatable vibes and I had to pick it up! Just look at Tortoise’s expression! HA! Brilliant! And this continues throughout the book. This story is sure to bring laughter to children and adults!

Tortoise loves to sleep through winter each year, because why not? Nothing special happens in winter. But this year, his friends are determined to prove to him that is NOT the case. With snowballs, ice skating, sledding and more, maybe his winter-loving friends are right— winter has some magic after all!

Children can first decide if they like winter or do not like winter by circling "like" or "do not like" in the sentence. Then, students will complete the sentence by giving a reason why they like or do not like winter and draw a picture.

As with every picture book, I also want to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book.

Let’s play a game! Who or What Caused that Sound!

In this story, Tortoise is waken up by various sounds throughout the story. Let’s have your children/students practice their listening skills with a little game!

There are two different ways you can play:

  1. A large group: WHO Caused that Sound? If you have a classroom full of kids, this is a super fun game to see if you students know each other’s voices. Select one student at a time to go to the front of the classroom and turn away from their peers or put a blindfold on. Then as the teacher you walk around the room tapping on one student at a time to say a word or short phrase. The student at the front of the room then has to guess WHO made that sound? Play several rounds for various students to get a turn :)

  2. One or two children: WHAT Caused that Sound? If you only have one or two children who will play the game, let’s use objects for them to guess. Have the child/ren close their eyes or put a blindfold on. Just using regular household items, make different sounds and ask the child if they can guess what made that sound. A few options: Oven timer, turning on the faucet, turning on the TV/Alexa/radio, moving a chair, opening a cupboard and closing it, banging on a pot, opening and closing a door, etc.

I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, A Loud Winter’s Nap, the printables, and hands-on activity.
