The Snow Thief

Happy New Year! The first feature of 2025 is here with The Snow Thief by Alice Hemming (Author), Nicola Slater (Illustrator).

I was so excited to hear a second book was coming out featuring these two captivating characters, Squirrel and Bird. If you and/or your children enjoyed the first of this series, The Leaf Thief, be sure to pick up this one! With the funny duo, vibrant illustrations, and the magic of winter throughout, this is one the whole family and/or classroom will enjoy!

They’re back! Squirrel and Bird have set out on another hilarious adventure together, but this time, it’s not fall! It’s winter and there is a new thief in town! Once Squirrel starts to finally appreciate the snow and enjoy it, it disappears! Squirrel is on mission to find how what happened to the snow, and with his trusty side kick, Bird, with him along the way, kids are sure to laugh and engage throughout the story.

As with every picture book, I also want to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book.

Let’s do an experiment! Since this book is all about Squirrel trying to figure out what happened to the snow, let’s help kids understand what happened to it and why.

Materials needed:

-Muffin tin or small bowls

-Snow (if snow is not available to you at this time, you can always use cubes of ice!)

-Different items around the house to see if it melts the snow. Such as: salt, sugar, hot water, cold water, sprinkles, glitter, paint, food coloring, milk, hot coffee, ice, ect

Instructions:

-Place 1 cup of snow in each muffin tin

-Bring muffin tin inside and ask the children to make predictions for what will happen to the snow once it is inside

-Once they discuss melting, ask the children if they think different materials could make the snow melt faster

-Show them the different options and allow them to pour the different materials over each snow cup and watch what happens

-Did certain materials make the snow melt faster than the others? Why or why not?

-What other things in nature make snow melt faster or slower?

-And for a final question: Who do you think was the real “snow thief” from the book.

I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, The Snow Thief, the printables, and hands-on activity.
