The Three Canadian Pigs

I am so excited to feature The Three Canadian Pigs by Jocelyn Watkinson (Author), Marcus Cutler (Illustrator) as the first book of 2024’s Picture Books, Printables, and Play—OH MY!

First of all, just look at this cover… I mean, it has FUN written all over it! The details Marcus Cutler put on this cover are just brilliant. The flying goose referee is hilarious! So good.

This story is such a clever take on the classic story of The Three Little Pigs.

When the Big Bad Wolf shows up at the rink and announces the pigs are “Canadian bacon!”, AKA lunch— the pigs hop on their snow mobile to get away. But, Wolf’s friends Moose and Bear show up, and the Pigs offer to settle this the Canadian way— a hockey game!

With great humor, excellent rhyme, and awesome illustrations— a picture book the whole family will love and enjoy each winter!

After reading this story, I hope your kiddos enjoy these four FREE printables below.

This first printable is to help kids learn some of the equipment used in a hockey game.

I love having students/my kids retell stories. It is such a great way to help them with their comprehension. What were the sequence of events? What happened first, second, third, etc?

I always had my students do a journal page for each story we read. Then would three-hole punch them and put them in a binder. This is a simple one, asking them to reflect on their favorite part. :)

There you have FOUR FREE printables to use with the picture book, The Three Canadian Pigs. But, not only will I be including printables with each story, I am HUGE believer in hands-on and playing to learn SO of course we have to add the PLAY in Picture Books, Printables and Play— OH MY!

For this story, let’s make our own hockey table! I got this idea from my son’s kindergarten class. They had a science lesson on movement, push, pull, etc. and they got to work together to make their own. So I did some research and found a fun simple way to make your own “hockey table” using things in your home :)

DIY Hockey Table!

Materials needed:

Pieces of cardboard - Rubber bands - Ruler - Box cutter - Bottle caps - Tape

Here is a 5 minute video on how to make this hockey table: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjXLTlAERAc

How to win: Get your 3 bottle caps onto the other side, before your opponent! (Or just play for fun!)

More fun play ideas for this story:

-Go ice skating

-Go to a local hockey team’s game

-Make your own “hockey helmet” using card board boxes

-Watch The Mighty Ducks (hockey movie from 1992 based here in Minnesota!)

I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, The Three Canadian Pigs, the printables and play activities!
