BroomMates: A Brewing Boundary Battle
The second feature of October is here with BroomMates: A Brewing Boundary Battle by Lynne Marie (Author), Brenda Reeves Sturgis (Author), Nico Ecenarro (Illustrator).
I’ve had my eye on this witchy picture book since I saw the cover reveal! It reminded me of my sister and I sharing a bedroom as kids, as we couldn’t have been more different growing up. More times than I can count, we also drew the imaginary line down the center of our room (and/or used duct tape!). Kids are sure to enjoy this fun rhyming, chaotic, witchy, sisterly-bound picture book!
When witchy sisters Matilda and Malin share a broom, AND a room, they must figure out how to do this with such different tastes. One likes colors, one likes black. One likes glitter, one likes gloom! What’s a witch to do? While silly antics ensue, they might have to figure out a better way to compromise before… KABOOM!
After reading this story, I hope your kiddos enjoy these FREE printables below.

As with every picture book, I also like to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book.
Not wanting to ruin the end completely, I will just say that there is a potion shop created and the two sisters do some compromising :)
So, let’s make a POTION!
Making potions is something my kids LOVE to do. It always seems to happen around fall, but it has came up during different times of the year as well. We have a big, black witch’s cauldron that my kids like to use, but a large pot or bowl would work just fine as well.
The fun thing about making “potions” with kids, is that they can put ANYTHING in it (that’s safe, of course) because you don’t eat potions! They get to be creative, get a little messy, and have fun adding and mixing different things.
With THIS particular potion, challenge your kids to add a little something that Matilda would like and also a little something that Malin would like (opposites).
For example:
Thorns and flowers
Water and oil
Black food coloring and colored food coloring
Colorful paint and mud
Rocks and glitter
Candy and vegetables
My kids throw everything and anything into their potions so let them be creative. If they are having a hard time thinking of things that are opposite to put in, maybe you say one thing, and give them hints to lead them to something that is different.
Enjoy the potion making!
Also, at the end of this book, there is a HOW TO DRAW BROOMMATES, which shows 6 different steps on how to draw Matilda and Malin. SO FUN!
I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, BroomMates: A Brewing Boundary Battle, the printables and hands-on activity!
