Blink and Glow

The first feature of July for Picture Books, Printables, and Play—OH MY! is here with Blink and Glow by Raven Howell (Author), Ann Pilicer (Illustrator).

It’s the PERFECT day to feature this picture book as it is publication day! Happy book birthday, Blink and Glow! Lilly and Leo are SO excited when they catch a firefly and salamander in their glass jars. But when Grandma shares with them the importance of freedom in their natural world, the kids think twice about bringing their catches to school the next day for show-and-tell. With child-friendly text, GORGEOUS illustrations, and a beautiful message about protecting nature, this is the perfect summer read for ages 4-8.

After reading this story, I hope your kiddos enjoy these FREE printables below.

This is a simple coloring activity where kids are asked to find the matching fireflies and color them the same color. There is 1 set of each matching firefly.

Here is a fun maze to help the salamander find it’s pond.

This journal page will help kids reflect on which critters they would enjoy “catching” but ALSO, releasing back to nature.

As with every picture book, I also want to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book. But this book also comes with a bonus all on it’s own! In the back of the book, there is a craft idea included which shows step by step how to make a Firefly Suncatcher!

For my own craft related to this book, I couldn’t help but want to highlight the GORGEOUS illustrations in this story.

Directions:

Look over the story’s illustrations with the child/ren. Ask them about the colors they see, the details, etc.

Have them create their own nature illustrations based off the pictures they see in the story. They can add similar details or create something completely different.

I chose to use black construction paper and chalk for this craft as I feel it brings out the similar colors, textures seen in the pictures the illustrator, Ann Pilicer used. I am NO artist, but to the left is a mock up of what I drew based off one of the pictures in this book.

(I used mostly blue and yellow, similar to in Blink and Glow, but the colors didn’t come through in the photo as well as I hoped.)

Materials needed:

-The book, Blink and Glow

-Chalk of various colors but specifically blue and yellow

-Black construction paper (can draw on driveway or street as well :) )

I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, Blink and Glow, the printables and play activity.
