Bear is a Bear

The first feature of March is finally here with just the SWEETEST story along side the perfect fitting illustrations Bear is a Bear by Jonathan Stutzman (Author) and Dan Santat (Illustrator).

As someone who may or may not still have their stuffie (no judgement please), and who’s kids rely heavily on their stuffies each night, I just teared up as I read this story.

It is the perfect tribute to our childhood companions. We all know the comfort, fun and memories these companions bring and this book shares them perfectly. Watch as the child grows from a baby to an adult and as Bear changes from a tissue, to a ghost, to a protector, to a scientist, to a piece of home, to a memory, to an old friend and everything in between, but Bear is always full of love.

This book would make a wonderful gift for a young child with a loveable stuffie/companion of their own.

After reading this story, I hope your kiddos enjoy these FREE printables below.

This first printable is a journal reflection page. Have the kiddos think back to the story and choose one of the characteristics that bear “is.” Whether a ghost, an artist, a pillow, etc. Have them draw a picture and complete the sentence.

Copy and paste into a word document or download the printable here.

For this printable, have the children choose what THEY want their bear to be. Maybe it’s a soccer player, maybe a swimmer, maybe a star? Whatever they choose their “companion” to be and decorate their bear that way. You can use various art materials or just markers/crayons.

This final printable is a simple maze. Help the child find their bear!

There are a variety of companions to choose from as well!

Other possibilities:

-Go to Build a Bear Workshop if you have one near you.
